Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs due to the relaxation of the soft tissues of the throat, blocking patients’ airways as they sleep. Many recognize sleep apnea as annoying or disruptive snoring, but this disorder can lead to serious health concerns, such as:
• Heart Disease
This disorder is a chronic illness which can last a lifetime and impacts patients of all ages. Categorized by episodes of no breathing, gasping for breath, or loud snoring while asleep, OSA symptoms can intensify with age. Sleep apnea can also lead to symptoms such as fatigue during the day, irritability, and teeth grinding. At Implant and Oral Surgery of Colorado, our Castle Rock oral surgeon provides sleep appliances that fit comfortably into the smile and protect your teeth and jaw from further damage caused by sleep apnea.
Qualifying for Oral Appliances
A sleep study is necessary to determine whether you have sleep apnea and require treatment with oral appliances. Dr. Bandrowsky assists in the diagnosis by referring you to a trusted local specialist who will determine the severity of your sleep apnea.
Once the study is complete and an OSA diagnosis is confirmed, we invite you back to our practice in order to gather impressions of your teeth and ensure that your sleep apnea appliance fits comfortably and securely. We send these impressions to a trusted lab, which then fabricates the appliance. A follow-up appointment is then scheduled so that you can receive your custom mouth guard and determine if any adjustments need to be made.
This treatment is provided to eliminate airway blockage from the soft tissues. Our Castle Rock sleep apnea appliances alter the position of patients’ jaws while asleep, preventing the soft tissues from collapsing over the throat. Patients experience a good night’s rest as their sleep is no longer disturbed.
